Rich and his wife Charlotte moved into their modern three-bed home six months ago and settled in straight away. They started the ambitious project of knocking through the kitchen and dining room, so understandably the guestroom kept getting pushed to the bottom of the pile. We find out how they transformed the spare room to guest-ready.
“The light and airy guestroom was one of many things that attracted us to our new home,” explains Rich. “Having two windows really floods the room with light, making it the ideal space for a home-office-come-guestroom.”
There was an unwelcome relic left by the previous owners though. “The thin, cream curtains draped across the two windows were hung on a tacky curtain pole which we hated. It eclipsed what we felt like was quite an unusual feature.
A neutral starting point
“We were already happy with the neutral colour scheme, so decided to start with the windows. We knew we wanted blinds instead, so we did a quick search online and came across Web-Blinds.
“Picking out a few floral fabrics as our favourites, we ordered samples. We always research products before we buy, so it was really comforting to see that even the individual fabrics had reviews. We eventually decided on the Grey Carnation Roman blind, which had a fantastic rating of 9.3/10!
“We’ve made a feature of our windows!”
“I was a little apprehensive about fitting the blinds, as I’m still quite new to DIY. But the instructions were fantastic and everything from getting the blind up to fitting the child safety devices was so easy.”
Rich and Charlotte opted for a recess fitting for their Roman blind, where the blind sits inside the window for a neat and tidy look.
“Our window dressings no longer mask our unusual windows, but instead make a feature of them. So we’re very pleased!”
“It’s still a work-in-progress,” explains Charlotte, “but we’re definitely getting there. I’ve added my little touches, like pretty lace pots and a postcard style pin-board. We couldn’t be happier with the finished results. And the blackout lining means our guests will be pleased with their night’s sleep too!”
Fact File – Meet Rich and Charlotte
Our home: We moved into our three bed home in Rutland just before Christmas from a Victorian terrace. We love living in a detached house, which is a real change from our previous home together.
Our room then: The guest room was the last on our list, but now we’re settled in, we’re keen to start having people over. The thin curtains had to go. No one wants to wake up at the crack of dawn!
And now: Not only do the Roman blinds make a feature of our windows like we wanted, but they also have a blackout lining, ideal for guests. It’s still a work-in-progress, so we’re adding little personal touches all the time.
Proudest project: We knew as soon as we moved in that we wanted to knock the kitchen and dining room through to create one big space. We might not have held the sledge hammer ourselves, but we definitely put in the graft, when it came to painting and decorating. And now it’s the room where we spend most of our time.
